I would send that dog back with a bullet tied to it's collar...that'll get the point across!

My neighbors are abutting our property and they have 3 dogs. Their dogs have NEVER gotten out in the time they've lived there. We hear them bark from time to time but, that's it! Our neighbors also have chickens and turkeys (at one time, guineas too!) so that must be why they are extra aware and conscious.

Conversely, we have three dogs too and ours have NEVER gotten out. We, mostly, keep them inside though.

Though the neighbors are trashy semi hillbilly/semi red neck (...no offense to ANY one) folks they DO take care of their animals properly.

I may complain about the trash they have strewn around their property and how I don't like it (it's none of my business, I know but...I am anal!) but, I am glad they KNOW how to take care of their animals.

Re: Lost nine more chickens and a peachick!

Jill,
You all must be saints...I can tell you what I would do!  I would wait until the dog came into my yard looking for lunch and I would use my 22 and end his little life! Then I would bury it so they would never know where it went. If you can't shoot it, you might be able to trap it and then tell it goodbye with some ether!
I know, I sound like a HA, but I don't put up with neighbors dogs or cats on my property destroying anything.
You may be able to file a civil suit or Homeowner's insurance and get some compensation for your loss.  I am sure your state must have leash laws?  In Indiana...it isn't a city thing, or county issue, it is a State Law.  The must be on a leash or confined to the property.
Anything on my property trying to destroy my chicks is GONE!
I am soooooooo sorry about your chicks.  I don't blame you for crying. It makes me so sad.

I have no idea what HA means but, your method sounds a bit harsh. Okay. That's not a judgment on you...it just sounds harsh to me. Just sayin...

hmm

I am a dog lover AND a chicken lover. So, this tugs at me from BOTH ends. And none shall meet.

angryflame

Sadly, the one that will suffer is the innocent one. The dog/cat. We domesticated them and they are OUR responsibility. For example, unlike their TRUE wild relatives (wolf/coyote) once they kill their prey - 9 times out of 10 - don't know what to do with it. To them it's all about the  CHASE.  If we let them run wild they will do what WILD dogs do...chase and KILL.

And NO lesson shall be learned!

Which means those stoopid people would only get ANOTHER dog/cat to perpetuate a vicious cycle.

beatinghorse

I find that these types of folks just don't or won't get it. To them...it's just another dog/cat. If they run off or get lost, they just replace them. Replaceable moving fixtures.

Gawd! beatinghorse beatinghorse beatinghorse beatinghorse

I'll stop because this really gets me.

Pedro
You always make me feel so much better.  smile

Chiknik, I am a dog lover too, I am hurt and angry and so many emotions.  Thanks all for your thoughts and sympathy, it really helps, I dont really have too many folks here who understand, just immediate family.

Believe me, if I caught the dog in the act, I probably could do damage, but afterwards...

And I am just a mess when talking to them, but they didnt want to chain her.  I am really upset that they KNEW and didnt call or come over and tell me once they knew for sure, that I just kept wondering what was going on, where they went, etc.

I dont want to start a fued as we share a drive, and they have lived here 20 years.  Their dog is fairly old I do believe, but I do wish it would age more quickly for sure.  Its sure a very fast dog tho, to get some of my youngsters it had to be, as they ran free during the day since they were four weeks old, and they were quick lil buggers.  I never would have thought something could get five out of seven of them at once.  Poor lil things, they were only bout 9 weeks now.  sad

I ONLY got ONE egg today out of 11 hens, and I keep seeing footprints, so I know she has been taunting them thru the pen. sad  I just dont SEE her as the chicken coop is away from the house behind some pine trees.  Drat it.  She hasnt been since I talked to the neighbor, but my egg production is awful.

Re: Lost nine more chickens and a peachick!

I do understand the dog thing.....I have a dog, and lost 2 to illness that I truly miss!  My big dog Ginger was the best dog I have owned. I did dog training (actually people training) for 7 years, so I get it.  I also "get" a dog who kills when it has food in it's bowl at home.  Nope, sorry guys, that dog would be in trouble.  If I had to catch it, take it to the shelter every darn day for a month, I would do it....maybe they would chain it up or get an Invisible Fence for it.  I could tell you a really crazy story about my dog, but it would take forever and I am sure you would fall asleep reading all the stuff that happened that led up to the ownership of my present scoundrel.....Rosie!
I am sorry that you have lost so many of your chicks, and that your neighbor has so little respect for you and what YOU love.
Hang in there....we are thinking of you and hope you can get around this situation.

And...NO! I don't think that would make you a HA! I think you would be justified...and so would Jill.

I just wish it would not have to come to that...but, sadly, in most cases...it does.

Re: Lost nine more chickens and a peachick!

Did you find out if there is a leash law in effect for your area?  If so, then your neighbor has to comply and you can throw that at her.  If she really cared about her dog, she would want to ensure her dog's safety.   Doesn't she worry that the dog could get hit by a car, shot, poisoned, or stolen?  One thing's for sure, the dog is doing a lousy job at guarding/watching her property when he's in your yard.

IMO, she owes you some replacement chickens.   Since it's hard to see your coop for the pine trees, how about getting a baby monitor?  Perhaps a LGD or a donkey.

I'm so sorry you lost more of your chickens, although I'm so happy your peachick came home.

If I were in your shoes I would be shooting some doggies...  That'll teach them to keep their dogs on their own property.

Re: Lost nine more chickens and a peachick!

Its really weird, my OTHER neighbor also has chickens and the neighbors dog (the chicken killer) goes over there all the time and hasnt thus far bothered her birds.
She also has a dog, but her dog she cant trust with chickens either.

Funny thing, when she first moved in, her dog chased the chicken killer neighbors cattle, and HE told them to keep their dog penned up on THEIR property.

Funny when tables are turned, come to think on it. People always seem to think they are "just chickens".  sigh...
