Kid with chest rattle

Eddie is 11 days old and I notice he has a little rattle in his chest. Can I give him a Tyland 50 injection? How much do I give? The only other antibiotic I have on Hand is Penn G...GloriaH

Re: Kid with chest rattle

I'm a super goat newbie, and wouldn't dream of trying to treat your baby.  But I did find this information:

When it's more than a common cold:

Goats can be very prone to Pneumonia.

Symptoms: Runny nose: snot is green (Make certain it is the snot that is green and not just cud. Some goats will have cud that comes out their nose and this is green but nothing to be worried about), "raspy" lungs, temperature (normal goat temp is 103 but it can vary a degree either way depending on the weather).

How I treat when it is more than just a cold:

I start the goat on Immune Support Tincture 3, 4 or even 5 times a day depending on how bad it is. Many times, this is enough.

I would also try aromatherapy or a vaporizer with the following essential oils: Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Lavender, and Thyme. (or even Vick's Vapo Rub)

Make sure that the goat's housing is dry, well ventilated and draft free.

Depending on the severity, you may choose to also administer Oxytetracycline (if the goat if not pregnant, if the goat is pregnant I would give Penicillin Procaine/Penicillin Benzathine). Many people may use Naxel in this situation, but it is a prescription drug and not everyone can get this. If you decided to administer antibiotics, I would also give Probios to help with stress and keep the rumen going.

From this website: http://fiascofarm.com/goats/respiratory.htm  There's lots of other info on that page, too, which might give you a better idea of what you are dealing with.

Poor little guy- I hope he feels better.

can you call the feed store. sometimes they will be very helpful, especially if you show that you know they are JUST beign helpful and won't have hard feelings if anything goes wrong.

Poor lil guy.  What's his temp?  Is he acting sick?  Is his stall free from cold and draft?

I would not bank on anything a feed store worker tells you.  95% of the time they're just random employees who  have zero knowledge of livestock and proper care for them.  They're just there to scan the barcodes.

Re: Kid with chest rattle

He's acting just fine. I just noticed a little rattle and wanted to head something worse off. I found this information on Jack Mauldin's site. Tylan 50... 8mg per pound, per day. No more then 5 days in a row. I usally use Naxel but the Vet's closed. I had the Tylan 50 on hand for the chickens sinuse problems.

Cuties.  I personally wouldn't medicate unless I absolutely knew for sure there was a problem.

Are they being dam raised?

Re: Kid with chest rattle

They are being Dam raised. They seem to be a little underweight to me. I don't want to medicate unless I have to. They are both active. Could I just supplement their feeding or should I just raise one if they don't seem to gain any weight.
