I have a hen that suddenly started drinking a lot of water. I would move her away from the water dish and she would go back and actually lay partially in the drinking container and continue drinking. It has been 3 days and now she doesn't want to move or eat, just drink. Her crop is bloated and when she puts her head down the water starts to drip and then pour out of her mouth. I hope someone has some help for me. Thank you.
Never mind...she just died. I will take her to UC Davis to have a necropsy done. I will get back to you on what was wrong and maybe it can help someone else. Thank you.
I'm sorry. Yes, please post the necropsy results when you get them.
Oh, I am so very sorry you lost her. it could be a number of things that made her drool water. Keep us updated on the results of the necropsy. Again, I am so sorry and sad that she passed. God bless you and your flock.
I got the preliminary necropsy results. It was Egg yoke peritonitis (when an egg is deposited into the abdominal cavity instead of the oviduct. The yoke is an irritant and causes inflammation of the tissues it comes in contact with). I had another bird with the same thing but her symptoms were different. I will update when I get the final results.
Any advice in treating various crop conditions wouldn't have helped in your hen's case. I assume that this hen didn't show the upright "penguin stance" or a hard, swollen abdomen that are classic signs of egg yolk peritonitis....just a bloated crop and excessive thirst?
