Sevin dust for mites ??

does any one here use Sevin dust for ther chickens, to treat for mites?

I heard its safe, but the label says this

Caution label says,
Harmful if swallowed. Harmful if absorbed through skin.
Avoid contact with eyes, skin or clothing.
Wash thoroughly with soup and water after handling and before eating, or drinking.

If on skin
Take off contaminated clothing.
Rinse skin immediately with plenty of water for 15 to 20 minuets.
Call a poison control center.

Is this really safe to use on chickens??????

Re: Sevin dust for mites ??

I think the label answers your question pretty well...I don't use anything on any of my animals or birds that says its harmful to me...if its harmful to me, how can it possibly be good for the animals?  IMO it sounds more harmful than the mites...

Stick with the DE...it may take a little longer to work, but they can even eat it, and it won't hurt them...  wink

BTW, Miss Popcorn...kudos and props to you for at least reading the darn label...!!   wink

And thank you for posting it for everyone to see... clap

I appreciate the comment on Seven.
So is DE ok to use around chicks.  the hens have it and they are the heat.  Can I treat them hens and coop and put them back hoping that the chicks get treated via the hens if that makes any sense.

I believe that the label needs to give that type of warning to prevent someone from taking the company to court because af some kind of skin reaction.

Being a new member to this site,, I browse through it, partly to figure out how it all works and partly to educate myself.  I am glad I did. I listened to that man at the hardware store trying so hard to convince me that putting sevin dust on your chickens is the protocol for insect control on your chickens...this is what people in arkansas do, I said well maybe that's how it's done in arkansas but I am from california so I will find some other way to do the job...I am NOT putting poison on my chickens ! They already think I am a cali nut anyway, they found out I blanket my horseswhen it's cold, evidently that's considered stupid here...whatever.  I am so happy I found this site.

Re: Sevin dust for mites ??

I found (DE)  Diatomaceous Earth food grade.  You can add it right in the chicken feed, dust the coop and dust bath areas...i just started using this... but i liked the idea that i could give the chickens something safe to rid them from mites/lice from the inside out  too!!    so, will see what happens..........
