Lice?

I really need to get here more often and under better circumstances smile

I have a BO hen who started acting lethargic a few days ago. I noticed she has lice crawling on her head, with eggs on the feather shafts under her "chin". I had this problem with mites before and no matter what I tried I could not get rid of them and lost 4 birds. I had a Permethrin Fly and Louse Dust that I was using. Everything I've read says keep away from eyes/face, so how do I get rid of them on her face?!

She's not standing anymore, and has lost her appetite. I'm afraid I'm going to lose her if I don't figure out something soon sad

Re: Lice?

Put some frontline on a cotton swab and put some on the top of her head. Or use a dropper and put a drop on her head. Do a short shot under each wings and under her tail.

Re: Lice?

Well I couldn't find Frontline anywhere near here, so I got this other stuff for lice, ticks, fleas, etc. It's a dust, so I dusted her vent, back of her head, and a few other areas I noticed scabbing from the bites. She's stayed about the same, only opening her eyes when I pick her up to hand feed her (baby cereal, Poly-visol, mashed eggs) and give her water. Everyone thinks she's dead, that's how bad she looks. But she's holding on and as long as she is I'll keep fighting with her.
I picked her up a little bit ago and off fell a ton of dead lice, so I hope it's working. They're still moving around her eyes and comb ( a few, not near as bad) but I'm afraid to get this too close to her eyes. Can I put ointment or something on her head, would that keep them from moving there?

Re: Lice?

Things like nutridrench for poultry is very affective. She probably needs some iron too so giving her a couple of days of polyvisol with iron would probably help.

Re: Lice?

I have an older dutch bantam rooster that I dearly love. Ames is 8 yrs. old and doing well.  When he gets any "bugs" at all he will get a crusty head and ear lobes from the reaction to them...
I use sevin dust on his body and use baby oil on his face, wattles and comb.  Seems to help keep the bugs from traveling on his face.
I have also used a drop of ivermectin liquid orally on him and this stops the critters inside and out!  good luck!

Re: Lice?

I got some dust for cats and used that. They're all gone, eggs haven't hatched yet. I had to order hand rearing formula because she's eating, just not solids and I've been mixing baby cereal, Polyvisol and chick starter for her. She's eating well but still not gaining weight again so I'll be getting that formula today (if Fedex pulls their heads out of their butts smile ) and see how she does. She's more alert now and eating better, so I have hope! pleaseplease

Re: Lice?

Well I've consistently gotten her to eat about 9 mL's of hand rearing formula every hour or so all night, and she seems to be getting more alert and fighting the syringe now.  We'll try a bowl here in a bit smile
