I have never, ever processed a chicken, but we will be soon.
My husband thinks to drain the blood out into the yard. I said that the smell of blood in the yard could attract predators, especially coyotes around here. If you process, what do you do with the blood? I read one post where picklespickles processed in the bathtub. Would it be bad for a septic tank? How long do they have to hang to completely drain?
I'm so scared to do this, but we are poor people (even have netzero for internet- that's how poor we are! lol) and have way too many roos and 2 meat birds besides who are all eating us out of house and home.

You could catch it in a pan and take it further from the house.
Just remembering from when I was young.

you could definitely catch it in a pan if you wanted to. i might use a bucket or trash can but more for width than depth. it's actually not that much. its really not. i have septic. not any different from "that time of the month." don't have to hang long. prolly half an hour? good luck. if i can do it, you can too.
i am poor too. but it makes me feel safe to know i have food in the yard, so to speak. i know my grandparents felt that way.
let us know how it goes.

I have this same concern. I was thinking of laying down a tarp below the hanging birds, maybe fill it with snow, then dragging it off, or collecting it up in trash bags.
I also don't think it would be bad in a septic system, although I don't know. I'm just thinking I don't want it all in the house (and my dh, love him to pieces, has delicate sensibilities kicking in... )

putting down a tarp is good. or you could even spread out trash bags in the same way. or maybe that is what you meant.
there really really is less blood than you think.
i am totally making this up. it is not scientific at all. but two tablespoons per bird? really not much. maybe even one tablespoon. seriously not much.

I have hand butchered a LOT of chickens.
There is not what I would call a lot of blood but if you try to do this in your house it will be all over the place.
Make your own killing cone and it will be easier to control where the blood goes.
here is a link to a site showing the steps.
