worming meat birds?

Ok this is a totally disgusting topic, so please no one get into too much detail or I won't even be able to eat them.

Should I worm my meat birds?  Now, they've never been on the ground, but I do have two cockerals in with them that HAVE.  I haven't seen any signs of anything, but I REALLY don't want a nasty surprise, but I'm also not a big fan of medicated anything in what we are eating.  If I'm going to do it, I need to do it now, so hopefully it'll be out of their systems come slaughter day (two bags of feed from now, come heck or high water, according to dh).

Re: worming meat birds?

okay. take this with a grain of salt as i never seem to have the problems with mine that others mention. i never have wormed. BUT then, i've never had to deal with chickens with worms, colds, impacted crops or freaky diseases. i've never even lost one to a predator.

in other areas of my life, i am perhaps more preventative. but with me and the chickens, i figure, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

oh. ps what i MEANT to say was.................first you take this horrible medicine and you put it in this odd orifice and then you step back in open mouthed shock because WHACK on the head, oh, you said you DIDN'T want to know any of the gritty details. hee hee. hope your holidays were nice, queenie  cool

I only worm when I see signs of worms.
I didnt worm my meat birds who were on the ground there whole life living with my other chickens I processed them all and no worms. I think you will be fine without worming.

Re: worming meat birds?

Meat birds have a shorter lifespan, hmm merely a few weeks compared to a layer...so, I really don't see the point in worming them if they are destined for the table within a few months.  But, that's just my opinion.....

lol Pickles- we all are neurotic in our own way.  I think my life is about this lesson:  We are ALL WEIRD.  Some of us just hide it better!  Took me 25 years to figure that out!

Anyway- thanks guys.  Since these aren't your typical meat birds, and I think I'm doing SOMETHING wrong with them, they're now on week.. 12 or something.  They'll be here probably another 2 weeks, but I haven't seen anything that makes me think they're infested.  They do eat like a flock of vultures or.. idk.  Some nightmare creatures lol, but I think that's just because they eat to live.. and not much else.  They don't really scratch, or preen, or roost, or anything.  Just consume massive amounts of water, and as much feed as my full grown flock of girls.  Poo looks completely normal.  None of them is overly thin, they don't seem listless or weak.  They are all shiney and pretty lol.

My other disgusting thought (again.. without getting into too much detail) was that the worms they'd be wormed for are in the organs anyway.. which will all be removed.  Therefore.. having zero involvement with the meat.  Is that safe to assume there?
