As you guys know, I brought home a buck to breed my Loopa too.. and suddenly find myself the owner of 3 goats instead of 2.. one of whom is getting stinkier by the day.
Looks like the reason he's here was completed yesterday (YAY!), so the countdown begins to the next heat cycle to see if she 'settled' (is pregnant).
And now.. I have 20 days to figure out what's next for this boy. In his current state- stinky, and ready to sow his wild oats- he can't stay here. He's very sweet and calm, but I am running myself ragged trying to keep him seperate from Granny. And did I mention he stinks?
This morning I started calling around to see if I could find a vet clinic willing to wether this boy. (I'd read that this procedure could run from $10-$35) So far 1 we-don't-do-goats, one that wants $130!!, and one that's calling back. Sorry to be cruel here.. but this boy isn't worth $130 to me (I know.. go ahead and throw stones..). Even if I wethered him for that price, then sold him, I'd still be out about $70 plus feed costs (although so far he's very cheap to feed). He was brought here for a reason.. and I can't afford to spend zillions to keep him. The prev. owner advertised him for sale but didn't get any calls. And the local swap-and-sell has lots of boys this same age right now for sale.. no one wants a stinky mixed-breed buckling.
I still have a few places to call, but if they ALSO want $130, my choices are...
1.) butcher
2.) Attempt to band him myself (causing pain and no idea if it's possible since he's carrying quite a load there.. oh and did I mention I've never done it before??)
3.) (and what I will try) attempt to find someone locally who is NOT a vet, but does have goats, who can do this procedure for me.
Anyone have any other ideas? Gawd this is awful. He's really sweet.. but no way do I want him permanently. I am sooooo NOT set up for a buck. And in case you are wondering what the big deal is.. I'd have to spend buku moola for more fencing, housing, etc, not including hay and grain to keep this boy fed all winter. Then my dh would make me sleep in the house with him, consequently causing me to stink all the time.. which would drive my friends away and ruin my 'intimate time' with my dh. My children would have to admit that yes, they had a stinky mother... and be teased by their friends. It just would be an ugly situation all the way around.
HELP!

Are there any schools in your area (high school or college) that teach Ag classes? I know that my high school had an Future Farmers of America club and they castrated hogs, so surely they could do goats.

Well, I made some more phone calls. Pretty much the only other answer I have right now is from the butcher- $35 but they can't take him until FEB! ARG! It would be sad, but I'd go that route.. but I'm not waiting until FEB!
Chickn- I sent Angie a hello e-mail a few days ago. I'd actually thought she might want him, since she lost her own boy, but so far she hasn't returned my e-mail. Must be busy getting ready for winter!
Hen- that's a great idea. I don't think we have any Ag programs around here (that I'm aware of anyway) since the FFOA thing was disbanded when I was in high school. We are a long ways (hrs) from the closest Ag college, but there is a sort of naturalistic one that might help me. I'll track them down and give them a call.
Adding- ok, tracked down the number for the naturalistic college- they do have a farm program. Have fired off an e-mail to the Professor in that department.
BTW- for anyone thinking I'm trying to dump him off awfully fast.. you are right! He's very sweet.. but peeing all over the place! And did I mention he stinks?
He wants head scratches and.. I can't quite ignore him, but all I can feel is his crusty hair catching between my fingers.. although it isn't actually crusty yet.. just sort of greasy.
This is a pain in the bum, my barn and goat yard reek, and I really don't want to get attached to him AT ALL, because even if the smell and pee cool down.. they'll be back again next year. If I could put the three of them together it would be no big deal. Darn DH! He should be making these phone calls!

I know absolutely nothing about goats but it sounds like you have one big stinky mess on your hands!
Good Luck finding that boy a home!

JJ- is there a website associated with that? For some reason I thought that was a dog/cat program?
Is it this one JJ? http://www.maine.gov/agriculture/aw/fixme.html Even if that covered goats, we don't qualify for those programs due to income.
Nice thought though

Wonder how many 'wild' goats there are roaming the remote forests in Maine? Hmmm....
Just a thought.
