Re: Sussex *****Post Pictures Of Yours*********

Hi All,
I am new at this so forgive my ignorance. I recently purchased 6 light sussex chicks who are now fully grown ( approx 5-6 months old ). The problem I have is I cannot figure out the males from the females. Five of the birds look like the ones in the pictures  in the thread, basically black and white with a red crop if that's what you call it. The last one looks a little different in that it does not have much of a crop and she has less black than the others. We also have a crower which we weren't expecting as we thought we were getting all female. No eggs yet either. Can you help me out with identifying what I have.

Re: Sussex *****Post Pictures Of Yours*********

did anyone help you out yet, slowhand?

if you look at oberhaslikid's larger pic of the light sussex, you can see the roo on the left - his comb (red stuffs on the top of his head) is bigger than the girl's combs and his tail feathers are longer, more prominent and pointier.  also, you can't really tell in that pic, but examine their hackle (the feathers around their neck) feathers - the roos have much pointer/longer/sleeker looking hackle feathers that frequently get an almost iridescent sheen to them (especially in the sun).  and if one is crowing, that one is for sure a boy!  smile

the one with a smaller comb and less black might be a delaware that snuck in there?  not sure, i can't remember off the top of my head what kind of comb they have.  but they look kind of similar.

your girls will probably start laying soon.

happy chickening!
