Re: Introducing new chickens to the flock

My hubby and I moved from our city to the country and his city girl has totally adapted to her country life.  The chickens are by far the best animals I have ever gotten.  I just ordered 25 more chicks from McMurray in the spring. I got some turkens, featherfooted cochins, minorkas, crested polish and campines!  I cannot wait!joy

Hey-

I am glad things worked out for you with the roos. It's always tricky with roos. Hens can be mean too but they don't do as much damage to each other as roos do...IMO.

welcome to the best darn chicken board in the UNIVERSE! :exc

Re: Introducing new chickens to the flock

Yep! Lucky for me my Roo "Big Daddy" is pretty friendly!  I have seen him assert his dominance with the hens and other rooster but never really hurting anyone. Although, you would think he was killing them!  big Daddy is like a dog. He follows us around our yard and has his nose in everything!

Yeah I guess I got lucky! He gets a little agressive towards me sometimes, but he gets in line pretty quick when you yell at him!  He is definitelt protective of the hens!wink

Re: Introducing new chickens to the flock

Do you need to quarantine baby chicks from older chickens for the possibility of disease or just to keep the older ones from attacking them? Also what is a good breed that will hatch eggs and raise their chicks? thanks

Re: Introducing new chickens to the flock

I just keep mine in the brooder till they are about 6 weeks and them put them in the run with the older chickens... There is a transition period as they determine the "pecking" order but I have never had any get sick or hurt... I have no idea what is the best type for hatching their own... I have one broody hen but she has never hatched any...
